You know, often times our shoes are a pretty hefty investment. They’re expensive and you want them to last more than a couple of wears. But bouncing around the city, wet and rainy days, cracks in the sidewalk and even long days at the office can take a toll on shoes, especially heels. When you think about it – a heel is pretty delicate and it’s supporting all your body weight – of course they’re going to get a little worn. But making your high heels last longer is definitely possible with a few little routine tricks. Want in on these secrets? As a shoe lover, I just couldn’t help but sharing how I keep mine looking pristine. Keep reading for some quick tips.
How to Make Your High Heels Last
Stuff your shoes with tissue paper or forms to help keep the shape. When you’re not wearing your favorite heels, protecting them in the closet is just as important as protection when they’re on your feet. Stuffing them with tissue paper or shoe forms will help prevent them from getting flattened or misshaped during periods of storage.
Give your heels some protection. Adding an extra layer of protection to your favorite heels is essential for keeping them in tip-top shape. Try using a heel protector (like Kiix) or even a sole protector for those extra special pairs.
Don’t be a stranger at the cobbler. Rather than running out and replacing shoes every time they are scuffed or damaged, visit your local shoe cobbler – they can work magic! Even in the most dyer situations, many times and entire sole or heel can be replaced. Shoe repair is a time-honored practice and is well worth it, especially for that favorite pair you just can’t part with.
Go for quality over quantity. Now this can be tough. We all want different shoes for many different occasions, but expensive shoes are priced high because of the craftsmanship and quality of the leather. Quality leather and other materials can stand up against the elements in ways that lower-end shoes cannot. So, lesson here: save those pennies and buy one pair of really great shoes rather than three.
Waterproof your leather. Many shoes can get some simple protection by spraying with a clear waterproofing that will leave rain and puddles rolling off rather than staining. Be careful to use the appropriate product specific to suede or leather.
P.S. Every high heel needs a break now and then. So I’m partial to FOOH whenever I need to slip on some flats. Check out the ones I designed for my own collaboration with Dawn Dickson!
