Think you know how to apply lipstick? Seems simple enough, right? But if your lipstick is bleeding, flaking or running, you may be overlooking some key basics. Here are some easy steps for properly applying lipstick that will stay all day.
How to Properly Apply Lipstick
Start fresh: Soft, smooth lips are essential to having long-lasting color. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep lips plump and hydrated. To slough off dead skin, use a lip scrub and follow with balm a few minutes before applying lip color. Try exfoliating a two to three times per week to keep your lips soft.
Apply foundation: To help your lip color stay on, try using lip primer or a light coat of foundation. Make sure the primer or foundation is nearly dry before moving on.
Use a lip pencil: Many women overlook this step but it’s absolutely crucial to stop the color from bleeding, especially with rich reds and pinks. Choose a lip pencil close to your natural lip color and follow your natural lip line. For fuller lips, line just outside of the lip.
Apply color with a lip brush: Instead of going directly to your lips with the actual lipstick, once your lips are lined, use a lip brush to apply even color to your pout. Start at the peaks and work your way out. Blot lightly with tissue and fill in any missing spots.
Add gloss for shine: If you want a little more dimension, add some light gloss to the middle of the bottom lip and a little at the cupid’s bow. This will create the illusion of fuller lips.
Lightly dust with loose powder: To prevent bleeding, particularly with bright colors, dust a little loose powder to set the area just around the lips.
Blot again if necessary and check your teeth for stains. There you go! Easy, right? Got any tips for applying long-lasting color? Let me know your favorites!
