Taylor Swift dubbed them as the new flower crowns while Alexa Chung reportedly said they’re “so dead.” Chokers. How can one fashion accessory cause so much controversy? I personally wanted to set the record straight by I consulting four of my favorite fashion bloggers and stylists to give me their take on the choker. The result: a resounding consensus. Chokers are definitely in! Find out what these ladies have to say below.
Lauren Ricardo of House of Lo made a seriously great point. Celebrities and trend setters are constantly spotted wearing chokers. “When Kylie Jenner and her gang wore chokers to Coachella last year, what did the masses do? They purchased chokers too!” She also mentions that it’s about choosing a choker for you. “A lot of retailers and stores are selling different types of chokers so people have the choice to purchase unique chokers to fit their style.”
Eddie Borgo Allure Silver Plated Choker, Net-A-Porter, $275.00
Laura Wears blogger, Lauren Bustelo agrees. “Although the 90s inspired choker trend has been in the spotlight for about a year now, I definitely think it will be on trend for a while longer. I’m all for it! I love how they are having a major moment and they have come a long way from the stretchy tattoo types you’d find in a 90s movie! From different colors, to materials and styles, the choker trend is definitely one to love!”
Luv AJ Vertigo Spike Necklace, Nasty Gal, $87.50
In need of a staple that works for any season? The choker should be your go-to according to Miami’s top fashion stylist, Claudia Alonso. “I think they are a spring/summer/fall staple. In the last couple seasons we went from wearing massive, colorful statement necklaces that would almost overpower our outfits to, now, something that’s simple and WAY closer to our bodies. It was just a matter of time before necklaces reversed a little and went from massive to smaller.”
This trend is also able to transcend way more than just just the seasons. According to Alonso,”Chokers are universally flattering on almost anyone, making them one of these PC trends we rant and rave about because almost everyone can wear them.”
Velvet Choker Necklace, ASOS, $8.07
Fashion blogger, Veronica Canales from Fiercely Thriftin’ says it’s all about nostalgia for you 90’s babies. “We loved wearing those back in the day. The 90’s vintage black tattoo string chokers – they would sell those for 50 cents next to the M&Ms. That was the best.”
Not feeling any of these chokers? Take Canales’ route and make one of your own. “Chokers definitely add that little extra spunk to an outfit. You can always improvise, get creative, make some chokers to wear out. For example, grab a pair of your CVS black sheer tights and cut them up…..and voila you have a choker! Slay baby girl!”
I can’t help but agree with these ladies! I love the choker. It’s a chic fashion accessory that gives any outfit a certain added charm. Just check me out in the choker Amber got me for Mother’s Day. Cute, no?
