How to Write a Book Proposal

Book collection

So you think you have a great idea for a book? That’s great.
But how to actually execute your idea and eventually get published? Most people
think they have to write the entire book straight and then knock on a publisher’s
door. If you’re writing nonfiction and you’re a first time writer, yes, you’ll
want to write the book through. But what people in the publishing industry are
looking for is an in-depth book proposal—especially for fiction books
(something like a guide or a how-to book).

A book proposal is all about the idea, who is writing it,
and why it will sell. It’s not always easy to change your mindset from author
to marketer. But you must be savvy in order to convince a literary agent and
publisher to work with you.

If you’re thinking about writing a book, I encourage you do
some research and pick up a few how-to books on proposal writing. But in the
meantime, here’s a quick book proposal outline to help you get started

  1. Overview

      telling the story/narrative/subject in brief.

list them and address them individually, assessing how each one differs
      from yours.
    • Answer
the question: why is there is a pressing need for your book?
    • Find
out how many copies were sold of your biggest competitors.

differentiate your project from the other books that have already been
published on the subject. Explain why your book is different and needed.

person in the entire world to be writing the book.

      any relevant awards/experiences.
