A few months ago, I sat next to this guy at a performance. He seemed to be alone, so I introduced myself and we chatted briefly. During our conversation, he made sure to mention that he has just reached his 100, 000-tweet. Obviously, something he was very proud of. But throughout the entire show, while the rest of the table was interacting, he was stuck on his blackberry, texting, tweeting, and updating his Facebook status. I found it so odd how someone who was so active on “social” media didn’t care to socially interact with the people right in front of him.
Although, I’m a huge advocate of social media for business and branding, we must not forget to couple our efforts with actual one-on-one interaction. Sure, something like Facebook and Twitter is a great way to interact with the masses. But what you’re clients won’t forget is the phone call you made; the personal email you sent; and the card you mailed. There must be a balance.
Yesterday, CNN released an article and video featuring Portland performance artist Cristin Norin. Her latest experiment has led her to lock herself in a glass-window, ground-level apartment for thirty days with no other contact to the world other than through social media. Her exhibit shows how too much social media can actually isolate you from the world.
I thought you might enjoy the article and video. Watch it here.
