Ancient Remedies to Mend a Broken Heart

“Hearts
will never be made practical until they are made unbreakable.” – The Tin Man,
Wizard of Oz.

I can vividly remember my first broken heart.I could barely swallow in the first few hours. For more than a week, my stomach filled with butterflies instead of food and the tears flowed and flowed and flowed.I was certain that I would never feel good or normal again and absolutely sure that my life was scarred forever, for I had lost my only true love.

Unfortunately, no one ever told me that there is not really just one true love.I grew up watching all the important movies like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, so I really believed I understood what love was all  about. You meet someone, fall madly in love and live happily ever after.I couldn’t wait for my turn.Living happily ever after is a fairy tale and even the beloved Princess Diana was very vocal about the pitfalls of marrying a prince.
Heartbreaks have been felt by any one brave enough to surrender their heart, but even if your heart is shattered, it will become whole again.

Like any wound, healing is a process. The heart does mend and new loves and more broken hearts become all too familiar. If your heart is newly broken, I know you can’t possibly believe that in a few short weeks, your heart will emerge from exile, your tears will be fewer, your steps will be less labored and you will be happy again.
Yes, even you.

But what about in the mean time?I understand. Everyone needs some special care and comfort during this very difficult period.I am always intrigued by ancient remedies that have passed through generations.I have scoured my antique books, the Internet and asked my older relatives for special incantations and remedies that help to soften the pain of any broken heart.

Here they are:

  • Balm of Gilead buds:Keep the buds close to your heart during the day and place them under you pillow at night to accelerate healing.
  • Dried Amaranth: Carry the dried flower with you for comfort, healing and
  • Knotweed: Hold the knotweed in your dominant hand (the one you write with), then imagine your heartbreak pouring into the plant, as it absorbs all the pain, and making you more comfortable.
  • Cyclamen: Carry this herb in a satchel to heal your broken heart and protect you from evil.
  • Tomatoes: Drink a wineglass of tomato juice 3 times a day until the pain subsides.
  • Pomegranate: Cut the fruit in half.Write your first name on a piece of clean white paper; fold it and place it
between the two halves, then tie the fruit back together with red ribbon and bury it in the yard.

Buddhists are far too spiritual for my flowers and fruit spells.Instead, masters suggest meditation and learning to let go.During meditation, visualize the person you are trying to get over.Consider what it is you want from your love.Visualize those wants flying away and let the wants go.Then, visualize yourself free from the chains of wants and needs from another.Breathe deep then imagine these wants and needs flying away.Repeat as needed.

I think I will keep this handy for my next broken heart. The most important thing to remember is that it is not permanent, you will heal (I promise) and you’ll probably wonder what you ever saw in your lover in the first place.Peace.
