There are few books that have made me smile the way “The
Guernsey Literary and Potato Pile Pie Society,” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie
Barrows. The novel is a series of letters between London journalist Juliet
Ashton and members of a book club based out of Guernsey during World War II. January
1946: Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of
the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as
extraordinary as its name. So you’ll get a little history lesson, as well.
For those of you who find it hard to get through a book, I
promise this is a page-turner. The tone is so delightful and the chapters are
short making it easy to read. This is a great book to enjoy with friends.
