If there is one topic I consider myself an expert on, it is this. Yes, building a business with your significant other can be wonderful! I am a perfect example of when working with your spouse goes right. My husband and I have been working together for 20 years (time flies!), along with the rest of our entire family. Working with your spouse means sharing a dream and turning your individual passions into a joint venture. When building a business with your significant other, there is a huge amount of give and take to consider. Here are my secrets to making both your business and relationship a success!

  • Leave work at work. Maintaining a work/life balance is absolutely critical to keeping your relationship alive and out of the office. Leave work talk behind at the end of the day.
  • Define your roles. Making sure you each have specific roles within the company is crucial for maintaining your own identity and equal business ownership.
  • Keep your differences to each other. There is no doubt about it, you will disagree. And, it will be more intense because you are also in love. Leave your employees out of it and discuss your differences behind closed doors.
  • Keep the romance alive. Relationships can suffer when you run a business together. Part of the journey means pressure you wouldn’t have if you didn’t work together. Pick a day each week for date night – and follow through!

Beyond everything else, enjoy! Working with your spouse can be more fun and rewarding than you ever imagined.
