My morning routine is to turn on the TV and watch the news as I get ready for work. My eyes are often focused on other tasks however my ears remain alert to the world’s news. For the top story the reporter was live from Cairo. On this particular day I heard a familiar voice. My eyes opened wider just to confirm by sight what my ears heard. The reporter on TV was someone who I was an intern with. I jumped up in excitement because I knew the guy on TV! I was so happy for him! We started in the journalism business at the same time. I was happy that someone I knew made it to the big time. Later that morning, when I was riding the subway to work I wondered, how does someone I was an intern with make it to be on the biggest news story, yet I am off to my routine entry level job. All the way to work I wondered what he did differently that I didn’t do. What road to success did he follow?
I often ask people who inspire me how they got to where they are in a career. I anticipate stories of hard work and the “big break”. Everyone one has a different road to success. Some have discovered a path less traveled or tell the stories of being at the right place at the right time. I came to the conclusion that I will keep a positive attitude and do my best in the present moment. Not all roads to success are the same. When I ask people how they became successful I’ll use their answers as motivation to keep trying. One day I will have my own success story, that will inspire others to never give up and will illustrate a hard work ethic they may want to incorporate into their journey.
