Guest Blogger: Carolina Cadillo From Mega 97.9
My name is Carolina Cadillo, currently I am the only female co-host on the #1 morning spanish radio show in NY. El Vacilon de la manana/MEGA 97.9. My dreams are coming true but I have worked very hard to achieve them. As a young girl I was either going to a be a lawyer or a journalist. My parents came to the US at a very young age. My mom who is from Nigaragua and my dad of Peruvian decent have always pushed my siblings and I to be the best at whatever we did.
There have always been my inspiration, sometimes inspiration doesn’t come from you but from those who have shaped you to succeed in life and that was my parents. In 7th grade, I started writing for school newspapers and eventually started working for cable TV reporting everything from town meetings to fashion shows. In college, I was hired by shadow/metro traffic as a traffic reporter such as Z100 and KISS-FM in New York. After a year of reporting exclusively for KISS-FM I was replaced by Wendy Williams.
I was only 20 years old and very upset, but my mom told me if you fall down pick yourself back up. A few weeks later my boss Joe Nola told me that a new spanish FM station was opening and needed a bilingual reporter so I immediately send my tape for review. I was a bit nervous and anxious since Joe told me that there were 300 girls auditioning for the same position, 2 weeks later I get a call from my friend Eileen Marchese Cohen who was on the IMUS in the morning show. She told me that the owner of the spanish station WSKQ had selected me as the reporter, he mentioned how much he loved my accent. Once I received this information I immediately started crying, thanked god and called my parents.
Since than I have done many things along the way, I was one of the leading roles in our morning show Movie, “EL Vacilon The Movie”, appeared in comedy shows at Caroline’s Comedy Club in NYC, starred in the broadway play the Vagina Monologues with Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Angie Martinez among others. I’ve also presented at the Madison Square Garden Mega 97.9 concerts and have been the spokesperson for L’OREAL, AAMCO among others. The spanish media has dubbed me the “spanish” Robin Quivers which to me is an honor.
Now to this present day, I am working on several projects amongst them to be the first latina woman to host a spanglish talk show. to those reading this, this is my story but you have to make it your own and make your dreams reality.
