3 Things to Remember When Asking for Help

We’ve all heard the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” and sometimes that is very much true. When it comes to climbing the corporate ladder, switching careers completely or finding a new business partner, networking with new and old contacts should be your go-to tactic. Here are three key things to remember when asking for help from those contacts (and how to not be annoying while doing so).

3 Things to Remember When Asking for Help

  1. Be serious about what you’re asking for. Don’t waste your favors on opportunities just because they’re available – reserve reaching out to your contacts for things worth their time and yours.
  2. Be prepared. Make sure you have as much information readily available to limit the amount of back and forth or stress on your relationship. This way you can simply hand off what you have to your contact and make the connection more seamless.
  3. Follow up. There’s a fine line between persistent and annoying. Always be thankful for their assistance and consistent in your relationships and you’re less likely to come across ungrateful or obnoxious.
