Albert Einstein once said ‘Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new’ and if you do what you’ve always done you will get what you’ve always got! Most women like a sense of safety and security in our lives, the truth is, we like to be in control of our environment. People have always feared change, they are afraid to try something new and for some of us change is not in our vocabulary. How many of you witnessed your high school classmates living in the same town 20 years later? Living in the same apartment? Some of them are probably still working in the same place! I always say most people don’t achieve success because they never try and they are too afraid to leave their comfort zone. Fear of change steals your potential and steals your dream! So how do you know it’s time to change direction? Below are 5 steps on how to stop being scared of change.
Step 1
Acknowledge your fears: It’s good to realize and know your limitations and why you are afraid of them. Acknowledge that the thought of changing or moving away from familiar situations is scary, but it might be good for you.Start working out of your comfort zone in baby steps. Maybe your first step is realizing that you might be afraid of meeting new people, afraid of being alone, whatever it is you must recognize and make it a “challenge” list. Talk to another person or someone you trust and maybe they can help you put everything into perspective.
Step 2
Write a “change” list. Stop procrastinating on what you could have done and start making a list on what you would like to do. Having a clear idea about what it is you want to change is one of the first steps of adapting to a new environment. Setups a support system include your friends & family members ask them for advice and give yourself a timeline. Make sure to remind yourself that change is good and it’s a step towards success.
Step 3
Think before you act: Change is good, but for those of us who fear change it can be scary. Marinate on the thought of moving to another state or when considering a new career. Analyze your process and know that whatever decision you take you are doing it because you want to not because others are pressuring you to do it. By analyzing all of your steps you will be able to digest your actions and program your mind towards a new you.
Step 4
Stop doubting yourself: Doubt is a ‘change’ killer. When you are contemplating on making changes in your life you will usually begin to doubt yourself which will eventually lead you nowhere. We often ask ourselves “Why am I doing this” it’s ok to doubt yourself once in a while, but remember to be firm on your decisions and confident with yourself. If you want to achieve great things in life sometime you need to step out of your comfort zone and try something totally new. At least you know you tried and not live with regrets!
Step 5
Remember that change has to come from you. You won’t be so willing to change if others are forcing you into it.When the time is right and you feel ready, then the process of change will start.
