Pantene’s #ShineStrong Commercial Goes Viral

Have you heard the talk about Pantene’s latest ad campaign which recently aired in the Philippines? Much like Dove has accomplished with campaigns like Real Beauty Sketches, Pantene has taken women’s advocacy to their sales pitches.

In the new “Be Strong & Shine” campaign, the distinction between the ways men and women are labeled is defined. For example, a man is shown as a “boss” while a woman in the same role is pictured as “bossy.” The tone of the ad is further deepened by the “Mad World” soundtrack playing in the background.

Pantene’s ads in the United States aren’t nearly this controversial, but given the climbing number of views (it’s up to more than 9.7 million on You Tube alone), we may see similar campaigns here in the US.

I am curious to hear what you think of the #ShineStrong campaign? Do you think ads like this can bring about change?

“Does gender bias still exist? If the answer is no, then why is it that women who take charge tend to be called bossy, whereas men who do the same is just doing his job as a boss? Or why is it that when mothers are passionate about their career, they tend to be seen as selfish, while working dads are dedicated? It is also quite startling that a recent study said 70% of men feel that women need to downplay their personality in order to be accepted.”
