Getting critical feedback can be one of the toughest things we have hear. And, while giving feedback may also be a challenge, getting it can hurt – and finding ways to remain calm is essential. Receiving feedback, especially at work, can come in many forms – on special projects, with an annual review or even when you need a little boost to take your work to the next level. Take a look at my tips for how to handle constructive criticism and when staying cool is tougher than you’d ever expect.
5 Steps for Receiving Constructive Feedback Like a Pro
- Try and be prepared. Your boss may be about to offer you some positive feedback, but be ready for anything. Remind yourself that you can absolutely handle whatever comes your way.
- When the feedback isn’t what you want to hear, take a deep breath and pause for a minute. Hold your reaction until you are able to collect your thoughts.
- If feedback is given to you in general terms, ask for specifics so that you know exactly what you need to work on.
- Think strategically about how you can turn this feedback into a win. Ask for some guidance in next steps.
- Take the criticism for what it’s worth, rather than blowing it out of proportion. (I know, this is a tough one)
