Spring Cleaning: Getting Organized

Few things are as satisfying as de-cluttering your life and getting a clean start. You don’t have to wait for spring to start doing some serious cleaning and feeling lighter. But since we’re in the right season, why not try tackling these four areas for a fresher personal environment.

Spring Cleaning: Getting Organized

De-clutter your work space – It’s easy to let our desks pile up with unnecessary clutter. Try making three piles: Keep, Toss, and File. Sort through your paperwork and try to leave only what’s essential. Chances are, there are many items you can scan and file away or toss/shred and put into a recycling bin. A clean desk will definitely make for more productivity.

Clean out your closet – This is probably one of the hardest things to do. Clothes and shoes take on sentimental value because of the events we wore them to. But you can’t keep a fresh wardrobe if the one you have is overly full. For motivation, you can usually take items that are in great condition to consignment shops and make a little cash for some wardrobe updates. For a quick update, donate or sell anything you haven’t worn in one year. If items need alterations or dry cleaning, set them aside. Everything else should be tossed or donated (but only if in good or gently worn condition).

Simplify your medicine cabinet – Check your bathroom for any expired medicine. Same goes for eye creams and makeup. For example, mascara has a shelf life of about 3 months before it gets clumpy. Liquid foundation and concealer will last between 6-12 months before the formula separates or lightens. Lipstick and gloss lasts between 1 and 2 years. When in doubt, throw it out!

Freshen up your kitchen – A clutter-free kitchen leaves room for cooking, baking, and family time together. For starters, go through all your cans and toss anything that’s expired. Check the fridge for anything past due. Make sure you’re using your cabinet space efficiently by adding stacking shelves for dishes and cups. File your storage ware by nesting items that fit into each other and stacking coordinating lids.
