Hair Removal: What’s the Best Way?

Hair Removal: What's the Best Way? | Loren's World

Alright, ladies, we may not want to talk about it. We may not want to do it. But the fact remains that it’s a necessary evil: I’m talking about getting rid of all those pesky stray hairs we could easily do without forever. But if you’re going to wear anything sleeveless, short, cropped or remotely revealing this season, it just needs to happen. So what’s the best way to do it? Read on to see which hair removal method will work best for each skin type and body area.

Hair Removal: What’s the Best Way?

Shaving: For a tried and true method, shaving is the way to go. It works best on under arms and legs, areas that are not as likely to get ingrown hairs. However, shaving should not be applied to the sensitive facial area or the bikini area. Arms are a middle-ground, but remember that you’ll have to keep shaving to maintain a smooth surface. Always replace your razor blades after about two uses and be sure they’re clean and rust-free to avoid any infections.

Tweezing: For brows and stray facial hairs, tweezing is a precise method. Sometimes used in combination with waxing, tweezing allows for precise brow shaping closer to the line of the arch. Be sure to use clean, slanted tweezers from a reputable brand to avoid breakage when pulling the hair, which can result in in-grown hairs. Pull in the direction of hair growth for the best results. For a smoother process, shower with warm water and allow the steam to open your pores before starting the process.

Waxing: There are different kinds of wax used for hair removal, all depending on the facility and professional providing the service. But one thing is certain: Waxing stings but remains effective. From peach fuzz to coarse hair, waxing works anywhere on the body. It even works on sensitive skin, though you may want to opt for soothing aloe gel afterwards to prevent redness and irritation. Waxing can get pricey, though, so if you’re up to the challenge, consider a home waxing kit -and use very, very carefully.

Threading: Used for many years in India and Middle Eastern countries, threading is a great way to sculpt eyebrows and facial hair without the need for wax. This is a great method if you’re looking for precision without the pulling, heat, and pain from other harsher methods. It also claims to slow hair growth, giving you longer results than tweezing. Always go to an expert salon or location – remember that eyebrow shaping is an art best left to professionals!

Hair Removal Cream: For something  you can do at home fairly easily, hair removal cream is the way to go. You can apply this mostly anywhere on the body (arms, legs, face) except for sensitive areas, unless noted on the product. Most products will be specifically geared towards parts of the body as the chemicals involved will be more sensitive for bikini and facial areas. Be sure to read the warnings and test on a patch of skin before removing a whole section. For sensitive skin, make sure to get the softer formula and leave on for the minimum amount of time.

Bleaching: If you’d rather not remove the hair but soften the look of darker follicles, try bleaching. You can pick up a bleaching cream at pretty much any drugstore or beauty supply store. However, if you have sensitive skin, this may not be the best option for you as bleaching can redden and irritate sensitive skin.

Lasering: For a permanent effect, laser hair removal is the way to go. But be warned – it’s going to take time, money and possibly a good amount of ibuprofen to get through this one, even if the results are worthwhile. Basically, laser hair removal works by beaming highly concentrated light into the hair follicles, causing them to destroy the hair for good. It works on all kinds of skin and hair – even thick, coarse and unruly hair. But you’ll have to deal with stopping any tweezing, waxing and shaving in the selected area for about six weeks before the treatment. To achieve the desired results, it will take between 3 to 10 sessions, depending on the size of the area. Bottom line: If you’re looking for a quick fix, this is not it. But if you’re willing to sacrifice a little time and money, this will outweigh all the other methods in the long run.
