How To Control Your Anger

Some of us just simply run a little, shall we say, ”hot”. Call it genetics or the way we’re wired, for many keeping your temper in check can be a daily challenge. Staying in control and keeping the “0 to 60” escalation tamed is important at home, at work and even when you’re out and about running errands or enjoying a night on the town. If you find yourself absolutely fuming when your kids are giving you a hard time, you get cut off in traffic or the grocery store is out of milk, it’s time to reel it in and get that temper under wraps. Rather than having your health and relationships suffer, take a look at these effective tactics for controlling your anger.

  • Before you say something you may regret later, stop and think before you speak. Choose your words wisely and give the situation time to fizzle out.
  • Once you’ve cleared your head and you have your thoughts in order, share your needs and concerns clearly. Skip the insults and go for direct, but respectful communication.
  • Learn to forgive and, fast. Once you work something out, holding a grudge really isn’t going to do anyone any good. Get everything out on the table, make your apologies and move on.
  • Laugh it off and lighten up. Remind yourself that not every situation has to result in frustration. Sometimes things just happen, so take a breather and let it go.
  • Try practicing some relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga. Deep breaths go a long way for calming down and bringing the moment into perspective.
  • Skip the anger part entirely and simply find solutions to the problem.
  • Rather than blaming everyone else, share your concerns by using the “I” statement.  In other words, put it on yourself by explaining why the situation is frustrating you. Example: “I’m upset that the house isn’t clean because I’m too tired to do it myself.” Rather than “You never clean the house and it’s your fault I’m stuck doing everything.”
  • Get outside or hit the gym. Rather than reacting, turn your anger into fuel for exercise. The fresh air and release of endorphins will leave you feeling clear-headed and ready to tackle the situation mindfully.
  • Take a lesson from your kids, timeouts actually work for everyone. When things get too tense to handle, sometimes walking away is the best medicine. Go take a break, have a snack and give yourself a few minutes alone.
