If you’re feeling a little scatter brained lately, you’re not alone. Many people feel like they can’t remember things the way they used to. Because our lifestyles demand so much multitasking, our brains are shutting off a little causing them to not stay as active as they should in order to be in tip-top shape. If you feel like your memory isn’t what it used to be, try these tips and get your brain back on track.

How to Improve Your Memory

  1. Get Enough Sleep – Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night, a crucial part in accumulating and processing memories so that you’ll remember them later on. Make it a point to properly rest each night.
  2. Exercise – Exercising generates blood flow and promotes the formation of nerve cells in an essential part of the brain. It also promotes overall health, helping to maintain healthy organ function.
  3. Learn Something New – Picking up a new skill forces your brain to concentrate, which can improve memory function. Learning a new language or mastering a musical instrument are great ways to put this into practice.
  4. Do One Thing at a Time – Stop multitasking. Your brain goes into autopilot and stops concentrating on what you’re doing. So even though you think you’re paying attention, you’re really less involved and not keeping your brain active.
  5. Play More – Doing mental activities like Sudoku or crossword puzzles often keep your brain active and fit. Be present and force yourself to think more often rather than zoning out on a TV show.
  6. Eat Well – Eating foods with Omega-3 fatty acids like fish and antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies is essential in protecting your brain from harmful free radicals.
  7. Take Your Vitamins – Check with your doctor and make sure you’re not lacking any nutrients. Also, ask about taking vitamins and supplements, like vitamins E and B12, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba, all of which have shown signs of improving memory function.
  8. De-Stress: Stress is a major contributor to memory loss. Find ways to battle your stress on a daily basis. Try a new yoga class or meditate whenever possible. The key is to actively rid yourself of that tension.
