One of the most important things to look out for over the summer is the safety of our little ones as they learn to swim and maneuver their way around the water. Enrolling your child in swimming lessons, particularly if you live in an area where there are many beaches and lakes, is something parents should consider as an essential step in their early development.
Swim Safety for Kids
Here’s a PDF you can save from SafeKids.org with some great, basic information on how to be safe with your kids around water while they’re learning to swim. Some key points to remember are:
– Educate your children about water safety
– Take the time to learn CPR
– Keep a barrier around the pool
– Don’t rely on safety aids
While there is absolutely no substitute for active, adult supervision, these two gadgets caught my attention as additional ways to help keep track of children in the water:
Terrapin Turtle Wristband – Place the wristband on your child and an alarm will sound (in your home at the “base”) if the wristband enters the water.
iSwimband – This wearable sensor alerts your iPhone, iPad, or iTouch if your non-swimmer enters the water or if a swimmer has been submerged too long.
