Polite Ways Of Saying “No”

Do you ever find yourself saying ‘yes’ to everything rather than saying ‘no’ when you really should. Instead of helping out a friend in good spirits, you become resentful and feel overextended. Saying no can be pretty tough – you want to be nice and helpful – but sometimes it’s essential. From getting pushed to your limits, to merely not having time for your own tasks and work, not saying no can easily leave you in over your head. With free time at a minimum, having a little time for yourself is essential to keeping calm and being the best friend you can be. Keep reading for a look at some polite ways of saying “No”.

“I wish I could help out with this one, but I have other priorities on my plate right now.” If you’re too busy – than stick to your guns. If you say no now, you won’t feel resentful later.

“Can I take some time to think about this and get back to you in a bit?” This method buys you some time. Maybe you do want to offer your help or participate, but you’re just not sure that it’s the right commitment.

“Now isn’t really a great time for me. Is this something we can tackle later on?” This is perfect for when you do really want to help, but you’re truly in the middle of something.

“This really isn’t going to work out right now, but I will definitely keep it in mind for the future.” This sends a message that you appreciate the person and their needs, but it’s not currently a match.

“I would love to, but that’s just not in the cards right now.” This let’s someone know you’re appreciative of the invite, but it’s just not feasible at this time.

“I am probably not the best person to ask, have you tried _____?” While you don’t really want to pass the buck to someone else, you really might not be the best person for the task at hand.

“My apologies, I just can’t right now.” This sends the message loud and clear – without being rude. There’s nothing wrong with being direct – in fact, it’s often more polite than waffling.

Have you figured out some polite ways of saying no or do you often find yourself saying yes when you really shouldn’t?
