Reaching for a cup of coffee isn’t the only way to perk up when you’re feeling like you’re about to snooze at your desk mid-afternoon. If caffeine-based solutions aren’t getting you through the day, try these eight simple tricks to get your blood flowing again.

  1. Chew gum – Chewing gum increases alertness and raises your heart rate, making you feel more awake. Go for a minty piece, which is said to stimulate the nerves, or opt for spicy cinnamon for a flavor you can’t snooze through.
  2. Turn on the lights – Brighten up your work area by turning on a lamp or two, and opening the shades to allow as much natural light into your space as possible, waking up your brain and making you feel more energized.
  3. Drink water – Drinking a large, cool glass of water can make you feel just as alert as a cup of coffee if you do it on an empty stomach. Having one first thing in the morning will get you going faster. If you still need a boost, splash some cold water on your face.
  4. Get some fresh air – If you’re indoors, get outside for a while and get in some sunshine and fresh air to awaken your senses.
  5. Turn up the music – Listening to energetic music cures a slump and distracts your brain from whatever is making it sleepy. Turn up your favorite band and give yourself a private concert.
  6. Have some fruit – A healthy sugar rush should get you going without the nasty crash. Try some fresh, citrusy fruit like kiwi or orange to spark up your mind again.
  7. Try essential oils – Try rubbing essential oils on your wrist or dabbing a few drops on a handkerchief for a scent that will wake you up. Peppermint, lemon, and cinnamon are all excellent boosters.
  8. Stand up and stretch – Get your blood flowing with a few simple stretches, no matter where you are. Here are some easy stretches you can even do at your desk.
