What Do You Do If You Didn’t Get That Promotion?

Not receiving the promotion that you worked so hard for can be a bummer. You may have felt that there were so many creative ideas that you could bring to the new position to help benefit the department or the company, if given the opportunity. In the event that you passed over or not chosen for this specific role, do not panic. You will be fine.

First things first, deal with your emotions. It is normal to feel rejected, especially when you really believed that you had a great shot. When we have our hopes set for one outcome and receive a different report, it can be a blow. Deal with how you feel.

Secondly, evaluate your skill set. Do you need more experience? Perhaps you may need more education. If this is the case look into training programs that your company may offer or look into programs that will benefit your overall career.

Next, you may want to evaluate your current place of employment. Do you feel that you have real growth potential here? You may be in a situation where although you may be really good at what you do but the company promotes through seniority. If you don’t see yourself retiring from the company, you may not have that type of time to devote. Be honest with yourself regarding your career goals and the company’s process for promotion. Last don’t become stagnant because of a little setback. Keep putting your best foot forward as well as producing high quality work. Your tune will come.
