Congratulations on your new promotion! You deserve it! The next step is your meeting with you new boss to discuss your salary. This is probably the most tedious and nerve racking part of the process. Many people go into salary meetings unprepared. In our information age, there are plenty of websites that assist individuals in understanding salary medians for their specific position, in their relative city and state. It would be in your great benefit if you take the time to do your research. You never want to go into a meeting that will have a direct impact on your livelihood, leaving the end result in the power of someone’s hands.

I want you to be fully prepared to negotiate your salary. Here are a few tips.

– Research your salary media. You go to glassdoor.com for a review of your salary depending on the level of your experience.

– Be confident in your asking. You know your worth and so does your employer, this is why you have a new position.

– You may have other factors that are important to your lifestyle. If you have small children, working from home may interest you, or you may need to have Friday’s off, so a four day, 12 hour work week maybe to your benefit. Take into consideration the factors of your lifestyle when constructing your salary offer.

– Prepare a counter offer. Always have a back up plan.

– Understand that you have the opportunity to come to a common ground with your employer in negotiating a salary conducive for your financial needs.
