7 Relaxing Things to Do on a Layover

7 Relaxing Things to Do on a Layover

Every now and then, no matter how efficiently we may try to plan a trip, a layover might just have to be part of the journey towards our final destination. Sometimes it’s just enough to take a quick restroom break, grab a beverage, and head to our next gate. But often, particularly during very busy travel times near the holidays, a layover can mean anywhere between 3 to 6 hours of a grounded intermission. Before you let that become a stress factor in the middle of your itinerary, consider the fun and even relaxing options you have at your disposal. Think of this, if you will, as a forced break time. Read ahead for 7 things that might make you wish for a layover next time you travel.

  1. Get a manicure – Most airports offer manicure and even sometimes pedicure services in their mall-like terminals. Take this as an opportunity to get a little mini-spa time in for yourself.
  2. Take in some art – Many airports are offering spaces to art galleries for some cultural breaks between flights. But looking around the airport may be just as interesting as some locations are also making modern art a focal point in their decor.
  3. Catch up with your BFF – This is so underrated and yet incredibly important. Because of our busy schedules I don’t get to chat with my friends as often as I’d like to. If you have an hour to yourself, try to schedule in a call to see what’s been happening with the special people in your life.
  4. Go sightseeing – If you have enough time to leave the airport (and are ok with having to go through security again), go for a sightseeing adventure in your layover spot. Ask locals which 2-3 spots are a must-see to make the best use of your time.
  5. Take a nap – This one depends on how comfortable you are sleeping in front of strangers. But if you’re part of a membership club that has airport lounges, a nap may not be too far out of the questions. Some airports even  have small rooms, beds, or recliners you can rent by the hour.
  6. Get a massage – If an airport has a nail salon, a massage spot may not be too far off. Sometimes they’re full spa-like locations where you can opt for a 30 minute or 1 hour massage. Others may only have massage chair options. Whatever the case, a few minutes of stress-relief may do you a world of good on a hard travel days.
  7. Have a fantastic meal – Airplanes aren’t necessarily know for their gastronomy. But many airport locations are revving up their style with high-end restaurants backed by well-known chefs. Take this rare opportunity to treat yourself to an elegant meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, in the midst of an otherwise chaotic and fast-food-inclined environment.
