Getting started with gardening can be so much fun, especially if you make an herb garden your first foray into the world of growing your own edible plants. A small herb garden can be a great summer project in the yard, so why not start planning yours now? There’s nothing more idyllic and romantic than clipping a bundle of fresh herbs to add to your pasta sauce, roast chicken and even a simple plate of tomatoes and mozzarella. Growing your own herbs is not only the best way to be sure you have it all at your fingertips, but it will save you a boatload of money in the long run. Herbs at the grocery store are a high cost for a small amount and with your own herb garden, you’ll have endless supplies. So what’s stopping you? When you’re ready to plan your perfect herb garden, here’s a look at the do’s and don’ts. Bon appetite!
Do’s
Get into the idea of compost (your garden will love you for it) and mix equal parts potting soil and compost when planting.
If you’re using pots, be sure they are large enough – at least a foot wide.
Go a bit light on the water (even during the hot summer months) – try watering every other day and if you bring them inside for winter, water once a week.
If you’re planting in the ground, make sure you have a nice sized space, the herbs need room to grow.
Understand the importance of drainage. The last thing you want is a bunch of delicious herbs with wet and rotting roots. Use stones, gravel or even broken clay pot pieces at the bottom of the pots or garden to help create room for proper drainage.
Don’ts
Use sandy or old soil, go for the good stuff! Remember you’re growing these herbs as something edible – starting with great soil will help build a solid foundation for thriving and healthy plants.
Use too much soil, suffocating the roots. Add a drainage layer of rocks and gravel to ensure some room to breathe.
Cut them too early. It will be so tempting, but giving them proper time to grow and thrive before harvesting will help the plants have a long and fruitful life.
Plant your herbs in small pots – they’ll suffocate! Definitely give them lots of room to grow.
