10 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

With winter officially in full force, many of us from coast-to-coast are experiencing blizzard-like conditions and bitter cold. While the first few snowfalls of the season are often pretty fun while you stay cozy indoors, it’s easy to get tired of bundling up, shoveling and being stuck in the house. Our bodies crave the warmth of the sun and fresh air, and sometimes winter weather makes that pretty tough, resulting in what’s best described as a case of the winter blues. You may feel tired and kinda bummed out, perhaps restless, but also sort of low on energy. From getting creative at home to learning to take advantage of a quiet snowy morning, here’s a look at 10 ways to beat the winter blues.

10 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

  1. Get outside. Believe it or not that little bit of winter sunlight and brisk air will go a long way in elevating your mood. Try going for a few quick walks throughout the day – just wear a lot of layers to stay toasty!
  2. Limit your winter glass of wine to one. Rather than packing on the pounds and feeling run down the next day, keep your alcohol intake as moderate as possible. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
  3. Kick your healthy eating habits up a notch. Staving off the winter blues is so much easier if you’re fueling your system with healthy foods – like leafy greens and lean meats. Resist the junk food temptations and you’ll feel higher on energy and ready to tackle another snow day.
  4. Plan a game night with your besties. No choice but to stay in? Invite your best friends over for a fun game night – the laughter will keep your mood elevated for days.
  5. Get Moving. Exercise is often the best medicine for dealing with your winter blues – and that means anything from a workout DVD, to getting out there in the snow and taking the dog for a hike.
  6. Try something new…like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or running in the snow. Sounds tough? Make it your new challenge to yourself.
  7. Do your spring cleaning a little early. Have some things piling up in the corners? Is your desk and kitchen counter becoming a catch all for mail, paperwork and other things? Purge and clear the clutter – you’ll be amazed at how much lighter both you and your home will feel.
  8. Have a full on snow day? The office and schools are closed for the day? No worries! It’s the perfect excuse to truly relax. Sleep in, pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read and simply enjoy some time to yourself.
  9. Take up yoga. Now is the perfect time to add yoga and perhaps even some light meditation to your daily routine. Bringing that sense of peacefulness to your day will help you focus and set your sights on spring.
  10. Have fun! There’s really no getting around it, winter is going to happen – without a doubt. So what’s better than simply embracing and enjoying it?

Are you feeling a case of the winter blues? What helps you get back on track when the winter weather starts to drag you down?
