What It Means To ‘Fake It Til You Make It’

When you decide to try something new, it can be scary. Maybe you’re getting ready to go on a job interview and you feel those butterflies start to welt up in your stomach. Maybe your not feeling confident enough to go on that first date since your last one was a mess.

It’s okay to feel nervous and worried, but it’s also great to get passed those nerves and overcome those fears. One way we can do this is by faking it. One of my favorite actresses, Jessica Alba, was once said “my theory is, if you look confident you can pull off anything- even if you have no clue what you’re doing.”

I love Jessica’s advice because it’s so true. Faking it ‘til you make it is all about pretending to be confident. It’s about pulling those shoulders back and smiling even when you’re not feeling up to it. It’s looking into your interviewers eyes and moving passed the shaky sound of your voice.

Not everyone has all the answers all the time. Even some of the people I look up to for their confidence had to have started out feeling insecure about who they were. Those people stand as a reminder that you actually can “fake it ‘til you make it.”

To help you along the way, instead of thinking “fake it ‘til you make it,” try thinking, “fake it ‘til you become it.” It won’t happen over night, but once you start duping everyone around you into thinking that you’re the confident person you always wanted to be, you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll be able to dupe yourself. So laugh, smile, and be yourself. Overcome that fear and fake it ‘til you become it. I know you can do it.
