Hurricane Irene’s has past, but the aftermath has left many with out power and flooded streets. My family and I were told to evacuate New York City on Friday night, so we took our boat Utopia 3 and hid on the Hudson waiting for the storm to pass by. Although, it could have been worst and we are all safe, but we felt the strong winds and rain early Sunday morning.
Irene made landfall over New York City with winds clocking at 65 mp bringing it a storm surge that sent 3 1/2 of water into the New York Harbor. The north tube of the Holland Tunnel, which carries traffic from New York City to New Jersey, was closed because of flooding and reopened late Sunday morning. Rainfall was seen cascading over Wall Street already 14 deaths have been blamed by the storm.
The Weather Channel reports that there are over 4.5 million people without power and flooding along the north east. In New York (statewide) there are 750,000 customers without power including 95,000 in NYC and it’s suburbs. In New Jersey over 400,000 power outages have been reported while Connecticut Light & Power has reported 486,000 outages and DC reported 193,000 outages already.
Even though, the strongest part of the storm has past it is still important to stay indoors for now until everything has cleared. Let’s be thankful that the storm was not as bad as we all expected.
