A Look at a 3D-Printed Fashion Collection

Has anyone seen the recent feature in Fashionista magazine with Danit Peleg, the recent graduate of Shenkar College of Design?  Her final project made headlines when she used a 3D printer to produce her entire final project collection. In an interview with Fashionista, she said, “I was always interested in the connection [between] fashion and technology, so my work was about laser cutting and 3-D printing. I knew from the beginning that my final project would also be [about] technology.” Despite the fact that she knew nothing about 3D printing prior to kicking off her final project, she was pretty interested, did the research and found a lab in Tel Aviv where she was able to experiment and learn more about the process.

Producing an entire collection via 3D printing was a pretty fascinating idea, but it also came with its fair share of challenges. From researching and finding a flexible material to working with a multitude of software programs that worked both for creating a pattern and printing, she essentially created and printed “sheets of lace-like textiles, which she then glued together to create the final pieces.” No easy feat, that is for sure.

Taking more than 2,000 hours to print all the pieces (approximately 400 hours per piece), meeting her graduation deadline was pretty tight. While other students were using fabric to build their collections, Danit was basically creating her “fabric” and constructing a collection – double the job! And you know what, the collection is stunning! See below for a video of the entire collection and read the whole Fashionista story here.

Pretty impressive collection, isn’t it? Would you wear clothing printed on 3D printers?
