There’s pretty much nothing more frustrating than having your foundation look like it’s not actually part of your skin. Whether you haven’t figured out the perfect color match for your skin tone or you haven’t prepped your face in the best way possible, making mistakes with foundation can be pretty obvious. The goal, of course, is to use foundation in a way that looks natural, giving the illusion of perfectly smooth and even-toned skin – and as a bonus – you want it to last all day. Here’s a look at few of my favorite tricks to getting foundation just right.
How to Make Your Foundation Go On More Smoothly
Create a smooth canvas for foundation application by starting with Lumiere de Vie serum before putting on foundation. This makes foundation application so much easier and smoother. BONUS: with this trick, you need less foundation, which looks natural and keeps skin light and able to breathe.

Use a flat foundation brush. While it might seem extravagant to have a selection of brushes for different cosmetics, they actually each work in different ways, helping to make the application process easy and flawless. Use the back of your hand as a palate for foundation and dip the brush. Apply with downward strokes and move outward – this will help create that light, natural look you’re after.
Find the perfect shade of foundation for your skin tone. This is an easy one to be a bit off on, but it’s something you need to be pretty careful about. You want your foundation to pretty much disappear into your skin – looking totally natural. Go ahead and test the colors around your nose and even under your eyes to be sure everything blends in just right. (For more tips on this, read this post I wrote about finding your right shade.)
Use concealer after you’ve applied foundation. I know, I know….this might be a new one for some of you, but it’s a great trick for using less and keeping it light! Once your foundation is applied and looking great, use concealer to touch up under eyes circles or other small flaws you see. Remember – you only need the smallest amount…we’re keeping it natural.
Complete the process with a light dusting of translucent powder. You need something to set the foundation and keep it all in place, so rather than loading up on more color, a translucent powder will merely reflect the light and give you a gorgeous glow.
How about you? Have any tricks to share when it comes to getting that perfect, natural look with foundation?
