The Rising Trend in Working Remotely

If you haven’t noticed, there’s been a pretty significant rising trend in working remotely over the past few years. Entrepreneurs, freelancers, UnFranchise owners, and companies around the globe have begun to understand that both cost-savings and high-level production from remote employees are just a handful of a long list of benefits. Not only benefitting the company, remote work makes for a pretty flexible lifestyle – helping to make day-to-day living a bit easier. From being able to hop in car and make a midday dentist appointment to working earlier or later than traditional office hours, working from home is pretty great. But that’s not to say it doesn’t have its challenges! Self-motivation is essential and that means also having a plan for how to stay professional and on target when it comes to work goals and responsibilities. Here’s a look at a few ways to get the job done, right.

Have a dedicated office space in your home. Even if you don’t have an actual extra office – that’s ok – have a spot that’s yours for working each day. If you do have the luxury of an extra bedroom or office – than go ahead and make it official – you’ll love having a space solely dedicated to work. Rather than working from the couch, go for a table or desk and a chair – just like a corporate office. You’ll feel more official, on the clock and much more organized.

Try to have a schedule you can follow each day. Even though the flexibility is there, having a dedicated work schedule will help you set your mind (and your internal clock) on work mode. If you’re an early riser and prefer to get a head start on the day, go for it. If you thrive by working late night – you can do that too. Just make sure you’re available when needed by colleagues and clients.

Get dressed each day just like you’re heading into the office. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a business suit, but it does mean setting the tone for a productive day. Don’t be tempted to work in your pj’s – by the end of the day you’ll feel terrible and that does nothing for morale or production. You want to be at your best – always – just like you’re at the office.

Take breaks. Working from home has its tough spots too. Sometimes you’re tempted to work around the clock – just to prove your worth – but remember your value and remind yourself to take breaks, just as you would at the office. Set a timer or get on a schedule – get up, take a walk, get some fresh air – breaks are key to staying energized and focused.

Set goals. Sometimes it’s easy to forget things like project deadlines or setting goals when you work by yourself, but it’s essential for feeling productive and hitting those target accomplishments necessary for your role. Keep a running list of weekly, quarterly and annual goals – and be sure to schedule time with your supervisor to check in on those items.

Be professional. You work from home, but that doesn’t mean it’s a permanent vacation – in fact, sometimes it’s more work. Conduct yourself just as you would in the office by staying focused and getting the job done to the best of your ability each day. Don’t forget to be a team player and continue to be a valuable and contributing member of the group.

Are you in a remote working situation? How do you handle the challenges?
