20 Easy Ways to Save on Energy in Your Home

  1. Make sure all doors and windows are shut tightly when the air conditioning is running.
  2. Add timers for all the lighting in your home. This will keep lights on when you need them and off when the sun is shining.
  3. Once a month, change the air filters on your air conditioning units.
  4. Don’t forget to have your AC unit serviced each season – that way you can be sure its running in tip top shape.
  5. Utilize blinds, curtains or shades to block out sun on hot summer days.
  6. Add insulation to your home to keep hot air out and (in the winter) warm air in. Same goes for the attic – adding attic insulation will help keep the house cool and reduce costs.
  7. Plant trees to help shade your home.
  8. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to keep the temperature in your home steady.
  9. Use LED light bulbs – they’re energy efficient and will help you save $$ too.
  10. Switch outdoor lighting to motion-detector sensors – it’s convenient, but also ensures lighting is only on when necessary.
  11. Use energy-efficient appliances and utilize the power save options if available.
  12. Don’t forget to dust the fridge the next time you’re doing a little housecleaning. Using a coil duster to clean off the coils behind the fridge will help keep it running as efficiently as possible.
  13. Try air-drying clothing on a clothes line during warm summer months and be sure to clean the lint trap on the dryer before use – that will keep it working at its best.
  14. Skip the drying cycle on the dishwasher and let dishes air dry.
  15. Think about investing in an Energy Star rated television the next time you replace your T.V.
  16. When not using your computer or laptop, set it to sleep mode or shut it down.
  17. Always run the washing machine on the cold-water cycle. This will save energy and $$$.
  18. Check to make sure that all faucets are running well with no leaks or drips.
  19. Get an insulation wrap for your hot water heater.
  20. Be conscientious and aware – sometimes it’s the simple things that really work!
