Have you ever found yourself in a situation – work or personal – where you suddenly have to put your public speaking skills to the test? It could be anything from your best friend’s wedding to an incredibly important presentation at work. Regardless – you’re terrified. I have to admit that I used to feel that way too. I was so nervous about public speaking situations; I wanted to skip out entirely. But, after a few years of speaking at our Market America International Conventions and World Conferences, the stage feels like my second home and I love being up there.
Here’s the thing – I believe whole heartedly in the message I am delivering. I am excited to share what I have to say and thrilled at the prospect of other people getting excited too. From casual toasts to the most formal presentations, believing in your message keeps you motivated and definitely keeps the nerves at bay. If you’re getting ready to head to the spotlight, here are a few tips for becoming a more powerful and confident public speaker.
5 Tips for Becoming a More Confident Public Speaker
#1. Practice, practice, practice. It’s never going to go exactly as planned – and that’s OK. But you can get up there and get a feel for the space and a feel for the words and message you’d like to deliver. You may adlib here and there as your actual presentation unfolds, but having practiced a bit will help keep your flow and timing all on point.
#2. Know absolutely everything you can about your topic. Feeling comfortable up there is the name of the game and being unsure about the information you have to share is the first step to letting nerves get the best of you. Whether you’re sharing stories about your oldest college buddy or you’re selling a product, know exactly what you want to say and why. You’ll feel so confident about the subject, there will be no worries when it comes to what to say next or answering questions.
#3. Make an entrance. Its might sound silly but coming in with a bold or exciting entrance sets the tone for the whole presentation. Your confidence is right up front, leaving no room for hesitation or the sense of insecurity. A bold start helps you connect with your audience right from the beginning, letting them know you’re ready to go and prepared to deliver some great insight.
#4. Add some visuals. Especially in the situation of a presenting a product or service, having a few visuals to help explain gives credibility and helps the audience understand. Using charts, graphs and imagery is a great way to help direct and guide your presentation along too.
#5. Believe in your own words. If you’re up there sharing information that you don’t believe in, how will your audience believe you? You have to feel the message you’re delivering in order to have your message reach the minds and hearts of those listening. You’re confidence in the product or service will be palpable for your audience – so be sure to pass that passion along.
