It’s Sunday and if you’re in the mood for a movie to get you through those last-day-of-the-weekend blues, then I have some great options that you’re sure to love. I decided to focus on films made by women because women in the film industry are few and far between so they need to celebrated every so often. Here are some amazing, awe-inspiring films that you will surely love.
Drop Dead Gorgeous- Drop Dead Gorgeous was written by Lona Williams and includes a cast full of ladies like Kristen Stewart and Allison Janney. It’s a dark comedy about a beauty pageant where things go questionably wrong. It’s on my must-watch list.
American Psycho- American Psycho is not the kind of film that you’d expect from a woman. Mary Haron, who wrote the novel version of the film, also happens to be its director. It’s about Patrick Bateman, a self-obsessed Wall Street drug addict and psycho who lives in a world surrounded by men just like him. It explores a world full of intense masculinity in a dark and frightening way.
It Felt Like Love- It Felt Like Love has a Rotten Tomato critic rating of 84% and explores a gritty coming of age story that is unique to anything out there. It’s not light by any means and much more of an artful endeavor than any other in its genre but it poses some interesting questions about what it means to grow up female in today’s culture. It was a debut film written and directed by Liza Hittman, and stars newcomer Gina Piersanti.
Marie Antoinette- I love any movie created by Sophia Coppola, but this film is a stand out favorite. It’s beautifully made and, again, stars Kristen Dunst. It’s the story of a young Marie Antoinette that aims to explore her as a person rather than a historical figure. It’s slow moving but beautifully crafted, like many of Coppola’s films.
