Listen, no one is perfect and that’s especially true for Miley Cyrus. She’s young and she definitely causing a lot of controversy these days. Her image isn’t always squeaky clean and there is a problem with her appropriating black culture that definitely needs to stop, yet there have been times when Miley has truly wowed me as a performer and humanitarian. The truth is that she has a beautiful singing voice and she’s used that voice to her advantage. I had a chance to hang with her for a while last year during Art Basel and really enjoyed getting to know her. I’m sure that she’ll learn from her mistakes and grow as an artist, but for now, she’s just being Miley. To learn more, read on.
#1. The Backyard Sessions- It seems that Miley Cyrus is at a high frequency at all times, yet there are moments where she tones it down in order to show us the real her. Back in 2012 she uploaded The Backyard Sessions where she played some of her favorite songs with her band. She brought The Backyard Sessions back this year with fellow performers to bring awareness to her Happy Hippie foundation. Again she showed a side of herself that displayed what a true talent she is.
#2. The Happy Hippie Foundation- Miley Cyrus started up The Happy Hippie Foundation to create housing for homeless youth and other vulnerable folks. She believes that everyone deserves and safe haven to be themselves and make their dreams a reality. Her efforts have already achieved a lot and it seems that The Happy Hippie Foundation is only growing.
#3. Wrecking Ball- In 2013, her engagement to longtime love, Liam Hemsworth ended so she put that pain into her art, creating Bangerz. Sure, not every song on the album is an emotional firestorm but with Wrecking Ball, Cyrus was vulnerable and showed herself to an audience that was ready to see that side of her.
#4. SNL Performance- Recently, Miley performed on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. She sang Twinkle Song and shed a lone tear while mourning the death of her dog. The slow song mixed with Miley’s intense emotion made me want to shed a tear along with her. Her performance felt so honest, I just couldn’t help it.
