As much as we want to believe that Hollywood is as perfect and shiny as the blockbusters and TV shows they produce, the truth is that it’s not. Hollywood has its own problems. Geena Davis- Geena Davis has been doing much more than speaking out on Hollywood’s issues. She’s been doing something about it. The actress known for films like Thelma and Louise and Beetlejuice joined the non-profit group Dads and Daughters in 2005 to launch an initiative aimed at balancing the number of female characters to male characters on children’s TV shows. This year, Davis took a step forward by starting The Bentonville Film Festival, aimed at celebrating films featuring minorities and women in the cast and crew.
Viola Davis- Viola Davis most recently spoke out about Hollywood’s diversity issue when she won her Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She discussed opportunity and lack there of for women of color.
Gina Rodriguez- It’s no secret that Latino’s aren’t exactly represented in Hollywood. Shows like Jane the Virgin and Ugly Betty are the exception and they’re few and far between. Luckily ladies like Gina, America Ferrera and Diane Guerrero aren’t afraid to speak out on this problem. When Gina won her Golden Globe, it was a win for the Latino community.
Meryl Streep- Meryl Streep could play Batman and kill it. She’s an amazing actress who talks about sexism and ageism in Hollywood by saying, “once women passed childbearing age, they could only be grotesque on some level.” Vogue, 2011
