If you can’t figure out why you’re not getting ahead as fast as you would like, take a look at these five things that could be holding you back. Break these bad habits right now – keeping these things in your life are not worth the possibility of missing out on the fantastic future you deserve.
1. Stop gossiping. Blowing out someone else’s candle won’t make yours burn any brighter. Gossip is a huge time and energy suck and lets be honest – no one wants that kind of karma. If you aren’t feeling supportive and happy with a certain someone, speak with them directly in a constructive way don’t gossip behind their back.
2. Stop trying to keep up with the Jones’. We all have aspirations and maybe one of yours is to have a lot of money and own a lot of things. Once you reach that goal then by all means shop your heart out but doing so just to keep up with what society is telling you is “rich” will only be detrimental to your journey to get there. You can’t start your own business, pay those bills, and get rid of that student loan by wasting cash. Be grateful for what you do have, think quality over quantity, and put your energy into your dreams… not the latest “it” bag.
3. Stop criticizing yourself. Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself? Probably not. Negative self-talk, berating yourself and tearing yourself down. a) is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. b) if you talk this way in public other people will eventually begin to believe you. You don’t want that! Replace each negative thought with something positive; start your day and end your night with positive affirmations. Put in the effort to be nice to yourself.
4. Stop hanging out with negative people. This can be tough because those negative people might be family and your closest friends, but your relationships should bring you up not tear you down. If you don’t surround yourself with people who are motivated and inspired it will get in the way of the experience you are trying to create – you only get one life why share it with those who don’t appreciate you and your dreams?
5. Stop obsessing about your past. What’s done is done and you can only control the future so much. By obsessing about the past you are making a conscious decision to not move forward with life. The future holds something better, something brighter, and focusing on NOW will help you get there. Not the past. Not the future. But now.
