There’s no doubt that we all love a good emoji – we use them for everything – from making a celebratory message more fun to explaining exactly what we’d like to eat for dinner. Emojis, in many ways, have transformed the way we communicate through texts and social media – it’s pretty incredible. So what if there were emojis that could showcase women in their professional space? If you could use an emoji to describe your day at the office, in the boardroom or even standing up in a court of law – we’d all be set. While professional male emojis have been around for quite a while…the female versions are lagging far behind. So…the logical next step – a group of Google employees recently proposed professional female emojis – hooray!
This isn’t the first time female professional emojis has come to question. In a recent New York Times piece, the author discusses this exact issue:
“Where, I wanted to know, was the fierce professor working her way to tenure? Where was the lawyer? The accountant? The surgeon? How was there space for both a bento box and a single fried coconut shrimp, and yet women were restricted to a smattering of tired, beauty-centric roles? This was not a problem for our male emoji brethren. Men were serving on the police force, working construction and being Santa. Meanwhile, on our phones, it was Saturday at the Mall of America — women shopping while men wrote the checks.”
So…here they are, the newly proposed female professional emojis – and, they’re pretty great! Which one is your favorite and what do you think of the full set?
Pleased to see @GoogleDesign‘s proposals for female emoji. https://t.co/S4RcfCavxp Hope they’ll add options for poc. pic.twitter.com/eJCQe2YGKO
