4 Books That Will Have You on the Edge of Your Seat

fall winter reading valentines

I love a good book. Just thinking about curling up in a big, cushy chair with a comfy blanket, a cup of tea and my latest read sounds so luxurious! When you pair that cool fall weather that’s rolling through or even a gloomy rain day – how can you resist an indulgent couple of hours just reading? It sounds wonderful!

Because I love to read so much, I typically keep a running book list of must-reads, that way I never miss a beat. As soon as I finish one, I know exactly what to pick next. And, in fall, with Halloween just around the corner, I am on the hunt for some good reads with just the right amount of spook. Feel like you need to spice up your fall reading list? Here’s a roundup of books that will have you on the edge of your seat.

4 Books That Will Have You on the Edge of Your Seat

4 Books That Will Have You on the Edge of Your Seat

#1. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This book is a #1 New York Times Best Seller and you may have heard of it when it was made into a movie. Get the full scoop here.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer? (via Gillian Flynn)

#2. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Also a #1 New York Times Best Seller and also recently made into a movie, this is a definite must-read.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has he done more harm than good?

Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut. (via Paula Hawkins)

#3. An Untamed State by Roxane Gay

Mireille Duval Jameson is living a fairy tale. The strong-willed youngest daughter of one of Haiti’s richest sons, she has an adoring husband, a precocious infant son, by all appearances a perfect life. The fairy tale ends one day when Mireille is kidnapped in broad daylight by a gang of heavily armed men, in front of her father’s Port au Prince estate. Held captive by a man who calls himself The Commander, Mireille waits for her father to pay her ransom. As it becomes clear her father intends to resist the kidnappers, Mireille must endure the torments of a man who resents everything she represents. (via SHOP.COM)

#4. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

Also a #1 New York Times Best Seller, this one looks like a serious page turner.

At the heart of The Husband’s Secret is a letter that’s not meant to be read…

My Darling Cecilia, if you’re reading this, then I’ve died…

Imagine your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret – something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others too. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive…

Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all – she’s an incredibly successful business woman, a pillar of her small community and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home.

But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia – or each other – but they too are about to feel the earth-shattering repercussions of her husband’s secret. (via Liane Moriarty)
