Ready for 2017: How to Leave the Past Behind

When the brink of a New Year starts to roll around, we often go straight to talking about setting goals, what’s to come and achieving big things. But, what about taking the time to be sure we’re focused on the present by leaving the past behind? It’s easy to get stuck reliving things that have come and gone, when what really takes heart and soul and a dedication to renewal is being able to leave the past behind. No matter where you find yourself in life, there are often things to let go of – shedding the weight of grudges, disappointment, change – moving on will open your heart and doors. Not sure how to make that happen for yourself? Here are a few ideas for learning to live in the present and leave the past behind.

Ready for 2017: How to Leave the Past Behind

Look at your past and come face-to-face with the things you’re clinging on to. Sometimes facing things head on is the name of the game – even if it means looking at things that make you sad or angry. When you face what’s bothering you, you’re given an amazing opportunity to take it all in and simply part ways with whatever has been dragging you down. Breathe in those bad memories or experiences one last time and make the decision to put them in a bubble and watch them float away.

Move on from people who are dragging you down. If someone or some people have made you feel less than the wonderful person you know you are, it’s time to change who you spend your time with. Sometimes this can be really tough. We’re connected to people for many reasons and in many ways and letting go is one of the biggest challenges in life. But, on the flip side, surrounding yourself with wonderful people who lift you up rather than drag you down will bring you straight to living in and enjoying the present.

Come to grips with facing yourself. The most difficult person to confront out there is yourself – no matter if it’s time to face the reality of a situation or it’s time to pick yourself up and get back out there. We are often our own worst enemy. Blaming ourselves for the situation we’ve created, things we’ve said and people we’ve hurt or even not allowing ourselves to enjoy everything life has to offer is no way to live life to the fullest. Once you come head on with your own insecurities and demons, the clarity of how to repair or renew the situation will be right in front of you.

Forgive those who need forgiving. One of the keys to living in the present is truly letting go of emotions that are holding you back. Often, those emotions are connected to a person who let you down at some point. The power of forgiveness has unmatched capabilities, giving you the chance to free your heart so that it can be open to accepting new love and relationships. If you’ve been held back by not being able to let go, it’s time to step up, step forward, forgive and move on. You’ll be amazed at how incredible it feels.

Living in the present rather than clinging to the past is an amazing gift – one that’s absolutely worth giving yourself. Do you think you can take these steps to make living in the present your new reality?
