Hunter McGrady is proud of her curves but she rather not be labeled by anyone. It’s an interesting perspective to hear during a time when curvy models are taking over runways, magazine covers, and social media. McGrady, who used to be 114 lbs when she started out in modeling, was recently featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue wearing a painted-on swimsuit.
“‘Curve’ I find is a more glamorous way of saying it. ‘Plus size’ has just gotten this dirty stigma. But I would love no labels [at all],” McGrady told PEOPLE. “I would love to be able to tell people that I’m a model, and not have to clarify that I’m a plus size model.”
“I do the same thing as the other girls,” she continued. “I get paid the same, I show up at the same time, we get treated the same. So why would I be called something else?”
Although I agree with her points, “plus size” is finally starting to become an acceptable word thanks to the body positive movement. So is it a good time to change things up at this point in time?
“I think it’s a form of segregation,” the 23-year-old explained. “I think it sets us back so many years, and I would love to completely get rid of it, and it may not happen, but we’re working on it.”
What are your thoughts on this ladies? How does the term “plus size” make you feel? Do you agree with McGrady and prefer to hear “curvy” instead?
