6 Phrases to Use to Improve Your Networking Skills

Hello, my name is…..

Sounds so simple, but introducing yourself is half the battle. You gotta get out there at some point or another.

What do you do?

Being the one to first introduce yourself and then strike up conversation shows confidence and the ability to go after something you’re interested in. Being interested in what others are doing also showcases your natural curiosity, a very positive quality.

What type of industry do you work in?

Similar to the question above, but gives the individual the chance to more loosely elaborate. Sometimes when your job is extremely specific or complicated, it can be tough to explain without some context. This is a good way of offering that chance.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Focusing on the positive allows someone to really shine in their best light, which people love. Especially when they get the chance to brag (just a little bit).

How did you get started in this industry?

Let the person have the chance to tell his or her story – people love to put some personality behind their success. It’s fun and personal, a winning combination when you’re trying to get to know someone.

I’d love to transition to [insert industry or career profile]. What advice do you have to someone who’s just starting out?

Again, make it about the person you’re talking with. When someone can tell you a personal story it helps to depict their passion and give you the best insight possible.

What do you think? Can you use these cues to do your best networking yet?
