A first look at director Ava DuVernay’s new film “A Wrinkle in Time” was released by Disney and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. We’re seeing talent like Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling like we’ve never seen them in anything before. The film, based on the 1963 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, tells the story of a high school girl named Meg Murry (Storm Reid) who is transported through time and space with her younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and her friend Calvin O’Keefe (Levi Miller) to rescue her father Dr. Alex Murry (Chris Pine), a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet.
The story begins when Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), a celestial being, arrives at the Murry house one stormy night. She startles Meg’s mother Dr. Kate Murry (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) by reassuring her of the existence of a tesseract–a sort of “wrinkle” in space and time. It is through this wrinkle that Meg and her companions will travel through the fifth dimension in search of Dr. Murry. Winfrey and Kaling also play celestial beings and friends of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who respectively.
“A Wrinkle in Time” heralds the first time a black woman ever directed a live action film with a budget over $100 million dollars. The only bad thing is that audiences have to wait until March 8, 2018 to see it in all its glory!
