Do you ever feel like you’re unsure of what your next step should be, or how to know if you’re making the right career choices? At some point or another everyone struggles with these questions. You want to be successful, but sometimes you’re just not sure how. And, to make it even more complicated, it’s easy to struggle with what success means to you. Whether you’re thinking it’s time to make a major career move or you’re contemplating starting your own business, the bottom line is that you want to achieve something. But, what is that something? How do you get there? And, how do you make success your obligation? Here’s a few general rules I try to follow each and every day.
How to Make Success Your Obligation
Commit to yourself and your passion. It’s easy to get caught up in job choices that pay the bills, but what about making the most of your life? What about making sure you’re combining your passion with work? It sounds scary, but here’s the thing – once you figure out how to make the two things work together, you’ll be so happy and so fulfilled. Let’s say your passion is fashion…imagine if you committed to finding a job that allowed you to work in fashion….doesn’t sound incredible? Don’t be intimidated by your own dreams and passions. Go after them. Make them work for you and commit to that as a priority for your career. Trust me on this one.
Don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. We all know what we love and sometimes it can be tough to prioritize ourselves. But, you have to in order to stay on that track to success and in order to find that sweet spot with launching a career you adore. When someone tries to stop you or doesn’t support you – remind yourself that you do not need the approval of anyone except yourself. There’s a reason why following your gut feeling involves so much passion – because it’s intense and it’s more than facts. If you want something, go after it – no matter what anyone says.
Define your goals. This is kind of a big one and it’s a step that many people don’t take the time to commit to. But here’s the thing: when you know what you’re going for, it’s so much easier to get there. Write them down, spell it out for yourself – it will give you the opportunity to come up with a game plan. Those goals may change over time, they might evolve or possibly even shift gears completely – that’s OK – start somewhere.
Work hard. Play hard. Enjoy life. We only have one life to live and, if we’re not living to the fullest as we strive to reach those goals, we just might miss out on a whole bunch of love and laughter along the way. When it’s time to work, put your head down and get it done, but when it’s time to take a break – revel in it. Enjoy that time with your friends, family and doing the things you love. Finding that sweet spot of work/life balance is half the battle to achieving success.
