I’m not saying we shouldn’t expect basic manners and mutual respect from the people around us, or a strong work ethic from those we work with; that’s a given. However, the problem with humans is that we all form our own individual standards and expectations from others on what love should be like and what acceptable behaviors are, making us vulnerable to habitual disappointment. Expectations lead to conflict and misunderstandings when the people around us exhibit differing values and responses to our expectations.
We have no control over how other people feel or act, so we have to let go of expectations to build stronger, happier relationships.
There will, of course, be those few magical people in our lives that far surpass our expectations and become those trusted few we can depend on. I thank God every day for JR and my wonderful friends and family. It’s still essential to remember that the one person we can always depend upon is ourselves, which is why it’s so critical to be living a life that fulfills our own standards or happiness. Let go of expectations.
