How to Handle Criticism like a Pro

constructive criticism

When it comes to dealing with criticism, the experience can be a negative or a positive one. For most people, it tends to be negative because human nature automatically makes us arch our backs ready to defend our honor. We want to protect ourselves at all costs. What if I told you that not all criticism is meant to attack you? Constructive criticism, which is thoughtful feedback, makes us better. Throughout my journey, I have received constructive criticism. Instead of taking offense, I listened. I used the elements that made sense to help me grow stronger and wiser as a person and a businesswoman. Like it or not, we don’t have all the answers, but the beautiful thing about life is that we have the opportunity to learn from others around us. This is why it’s so important we surround ourselves with intelligent, creative, and exceptional people.

Whether or not the criticism you are receiving is beneficial or meant to hurt you, there is a way to rise above and move forward. Someone critiquing you is not the end-all-be-all. It is a valuable tool that will help shape your success if you allow it. Always remember that you have the power to turn things around. Read on for tips to deal with criticism in a powerful way and use the experience to strengthen your relationships and improve your life.

1. Listen

What is the key message this person is telling you? Give yourself time to look inwards and reflect on their words; do they have a valid point? I find that in times of disagreement we don’t listen to understand, we hear to respond. Take the time to listen to what the individual is telling you. You will be surprised to learn that the person giving you criticism may be informing you about something for your own good. Not all opinions about our behaviors or choices are harmful. Sometimes it takes someone from the outside looking in to reveal traits about you that you may not have noticed.

2. Don’t take it personally.

It is almost effortless to view critiques in a negative light, but please avoid going down that road. If the feedback is valuable, take it in your stride and apply the advice. However, if the input is disrespectful, have enough confidence in yourself to deflect their words and walk away.

3. Respectfully state your opinion.

You want to show that you can accept critiques without losing your head. If you don’t agree with the assessment you received or would like to discuss the issue further, calmly approach the person to bridge the gap.

4. Take responsibility.

In some situations, you may be at fault. It can be tough to realize, but it’s important to take responsibility. Humbling yourself and finding ways to make things better will earn you respect and admiration. Use their insightful words to grow and become a greater you.
