Human beings make mistakes; it’s what we do! To achieve a happy, peaceful life, you have to learn how to forgive yourself for your mistakes and move on.
Forgiveness: How to Forgive Yourself for Your Mistakes
Forgiveness is a process that takes time and effort. Here are a few steps to take to help you along your quest.
#1. Understand your feelings.
We feel guilt or shame for words we’ve spoken or actions we’ve done because they are not in line with our morals, beliefs, and values. Understanding why we feel guilty or ashamed helps us to interpret our actions and move on. What would you do differently if faced with the same event? Assuring yourself that you learned from your experience is a significant step forward in the forgiveness process.
#2. Acceptance.
We cannot ‘unsay’ words or undo actions. Once you accept this, you can move on to the next round of your forgiveness journey.
#3. Make amends.
If you feel like a mistake or two from your past is too vast to forgive yourself for without making amends apologize to the people you think were most affected.
#4. Show yourself some love.
Don’t beat yourself up about your mistakes. Negative self-talk is a slippery slope to nowhere positive. Instead, speak to yourself with love. Accept that you made mistakes in your past, but remind yourself everyone makes mistakes, and focus on the things you love about you. Errors are what make us better people based on the lessons we learn and knowledge we acquire.
