Anger isn’t an emotion society likes to associate with women. Women are seen as sensitive or emotional—when we get angry, we’re usually considered hysterical. The truth is, anger is a normal part of being human and suppressing those angry feelings isn’t exactly healthy. At the same time, you don’t want to act on your anger. It’s okay to be angry, but you have to learn how to channel your anger into positivity. Dealing with anger and angry feelings can be tough, but there are ways to deal with your feelings that won’t hurt you or others.

How to Deal with Your Anger

Express Yourself- Express yourself clearly and concisely. Try to do so with grace and as calmly as possible. It’s not fun to blow up on people. You also shouldn’t blame anyone else for the way you’re feeling. No one is in charge of your feelings just like you are not in charge of anyone else’s feelings.

Recognize Your Anger- It’s important to recognize your anger when it comes up. Being aware of your feelings will help you and set you up for when anger strikes. Ignoring feelings just brings up more unresolved issues. Try to get to the root cause by journaling. Learning about you and your feelings is ideal.

Try to Calm Down- When anger escalates, things can get intense, so I suggest you find somewhere quiet to take a break. Head to the bathroom or a quiet room. Try to slip rather than leave unexpectedly. Take a few deep breaths, get down to why you’re feeling intense emotions and move on. Don’t simmer in your feelings. It’s not healthy and could elevate an already unsavory situation.

Find a Healthy Outlet- Journaling your anger will truly save your life. If you have time to yourself, get it done. Write down everything your feeling and thinking. This is a safe way to deal with anger rather than blowing up or swearing.
