Unrequited love describes one-sided love that is not openly reciprocated or understood by the beloved. We’ve all seen the not so fairytale stories in movies where the lead role tells the story of someone hopelessly in love with someone who barely knows they exist. Read on to discover how to move on from unrequited love.
Unrequited Love: How to Let It Go
#1. Be kind to yourself.
Rejection hurts no matter how strong or confident you are. Acknowledge your feelings, and give yourself time and self-love to heal.
#2. Remember you’re not alone.
Experts estimate 98% of us have experienced some form of unrequited love. Rejection can make you question yourself, so it helps to remember that nearly everyone has loved someone who doesn’t love them back in the same way for whatever reason.
#3. Take time to reflect.
Do you tend to fall in love with people who don’t love you back? Studies suggest that repeating this kind of relationship, again and again, can insinuate abandonment issues or feelings of not being lovable or good enough. Learning to love yourself first before anyone else should always be a priority.
#4. Let go without closure.
One of the hardest things about unrequited love is deciding to move on without closure. Unfortunately, there isn’t always a happy ending. You have to accept that you will never get the fairytale ending, and save your soul and energy for someone who will love you in the way that you deserve. Know that you are always enough – you and this person were just not right for each other.
