A codependent relationship involves one partner sacrificing their happiness and giving their all, while their partner does as they please with little regard for the other’s needs. Read on to discover five signs you could be in a codependent relationship.
1. You’re Always the One to Compromise
Relationships should be equal. If your partner insists on having everything their way without ever compromising, the balance is off.
2. You’re Doing Everything
Another red flag is if you feel more like a parent than a partner. If you feel like you have to wake your partner up every morning, pack their lunch, and do everything for them, it’s time to put your foot down.
3. You Date Damaged People
Whether you see broken partners as projects or like the idea of a partner staying reliant on you, neither option is healthy. The same goes for if you continuously take responsibility for your partner’s behavior; it’s on them, not you.
4. Their Mood Affects Your Mood
It’s normal to be upset if your partner is, but it’s not healthy for your partner’s mood to have the power to affect your whole day negatively or positively. It’s equally harmful if you feel yourself continuously holding back feelings you want to express to avoid arguments.
5. You Keep Close Tabs
Feeling like you need to know what your partner is doing and thinking all the time screams of insecurity. Identify the root cause. Ask yourself if you trust your partner, and if not, why?
If you recognize any of these signs, take some time out for yourself and identify what you need and want to make you happy. Your life is yours, no one else’s. Your happiness shouldn’t depend on anyone, and vice versa.
